Using the example of E. V. Dombrovskaya, a writer, scientist and philanthropist, the article analyzes the contribution of representatives of the intelligentsia of Smolensk to the organization of religious, cultural, educational, as well as church and charitable activities during the German occupation (1941-1943) during the Great Patriotic War. The most important role of the clergy and intelligentsia in the revival of the Russian Orthodox Church in the occupied Russian territories is shown, while it is noted that the articles of E. V. Dombrovskaya are an important source for the study of church life in the Smolensk region of those years, supplementing the available archival documents. On the basis of these and other available materials, an attempt is made not only to study the biography of E. V. Dombrovskaya, but also to reveal the features of her outstanding personality as much as possible. It is concluded that these efforts make it possible to recreate the image of an Orthodox Russian intellectual who, in the difficult psychological and material conditions of the German occupation, tried to realize his vocation based on a spiritual and religious view - to understand, perceive, cognize, comprehend a person and society.
