The author analyzes how freedom is described in the romantic poetry of Lord Byron.A different depiction of freedom - one connected with the spiritual foundations ofRussian classical culture - can be observed in the poetry of A. Pushkin. The keytopic addressed in this article is the description of Pushkin's literary struggle withthe “spirit of Byronism”: his antagonism to the individualist character of freedomof the romantic period and his spiritual struggle against the temptation of completefreedom that arises from the destructive experience of European revolutions.
