The paper presents the analysis of the image of the Gothic mansion Thornfield Hall in "Jane Eyre" by Ch. Bronte in the context of the English Gothic novel. The image of Thornfield is one of the most significant in the novel, while Gothic tradition is central for Ch. Bronte's literary work. This stipulated the closer analysis of the image helping to determine its role in the building of the characters in the novel. Gothic tradition is reinterpreted revealing the rational reasoning behind the seemingly mystical events in "Jane Eyre".
