The paper discusses the problem of the deformation of the journalist’s image in the young audience eye. As part of the study of the image of modern Russian journalists, an online survey of working and student youth in Yekaterinburg was conducted, the results are compared with data from similar studies of the Mediastandard Foundation, Levada Center and FOM. It has been determined that a young audience trusts Internet sites and social networks. Journalists, according to young people, inform society about events, evaluate facts and form opinions and values. Young people’s ideas about the role of a journalist differ from the general population’s opinion. Most of young people believes that journalists are dependent on their heads. Regarding the assessment of the professional activities of a journalist, among young people there is a shift towards a more negative perception of journalists.
