The study discusses the role and place of education in the concept of sustainable development of the world community that has played the crucial role in the ideology of the contemporary social democratic movement since the 1970s. For several decades, the program documents and various statements by the Socialist International have consistently defended not only the idea of achieving ecologically balanced development but also the need to consider the social and cultural components of sustainable development, which implies the development of a person and his educational level. In this regard, the study of several approaches of the Socialist International to dealing with the problem of sustainable development specifically related to the education system advancement is of great scientific interest, having regard to the fact that these ideological attitudes influence the political practice of the contemporary social democracy. The author concludes that in the ideology of the Socialist International, general education is one of the key conditions for overcoming inequalities on a global scale and achieving sustainable development in general.
