The article considers plein-air as an introductory design practice of students majoring in design art. The authors discuss the integrative nature of this practice capable in the framework of the competency-based approach to solve theoretical, methodological, social and applied tasks when teaching higher school students. The paper emphasizes the value of visual and logical components of training, which links the study of historical and cultural context with particular observable environment.
