The article analyses the content of “Aerograd”, a soviet film by Alexander Dovzhenko made in 1935. It focuses on the images of internal and external enemies of the Soviet state and cinematic means employed to create them. The author also investigates how the film reflects the social, political and military situation in the Far East in the 1930s. It is concluded that the Old Believers who were opposed to Stalin’s modernization were treated by the official art as a loyal ally of the external enemy embodied by the anti-Bolshevik emigration and Japanese militarism.
