Funeral rite with chicken and the history of village Kukarka

Бесплатный доступ

This work is a continuation of studies on the ritual practices of the Russian and Ukrainian population of the Baraba. It makes mention about ritual transfer of live chicken over the coffin during the funeral rite. An assumption about North Russian origin of the ritual is confirmed by the origin of the first settlers of the village Kukarka. The village foundation dates back to the nineteenth century. Documents found in regional archives indicate the belonging of the it ''s first settlers to the Old Believers, people from the Russian North. During the exploration of the Baraba here was formed a vast area of villages connected by marriage ties and common culture. Later Poltava immigrants were included in these connections and accepted ritual with chicken, enriching their own traditions, while in many other Siberian Ukrainian settlements a similar rite was not fixed.
