In this article, the author analyzes editorial material published in the periodicals of St. Petersburg Teological Academy Khristianskoye Chtenie and Tserkovny Vestnik during the period of the Great Reforms. Te public during this time period paid more atention to the various political and ecclesiastical problems than to formulations of theological truths, which is revealed also in the nature of the publications in these periodicals. Even the strictly theological journal Khristianskoye Chtenie was not averse to discussing inter-church and social problems. Te role that these academic journals took in the genre of ecclesiastic and political publicism is evaluated. Articles in this genre described the social problems of clergy during the reforms of Emperor Alexander II. Kristianskoye Chtenie and Tserkovny Vestnik are evaluated as journals fully involved in the polemics surrounding ecclesiastic and political reforms
