The study examines the analysis of the current state and problems of appeal and cassation proceedings in the criminal process of Russia. The relevance of the work is determined by the continuous reform of the legal and organizational aspects of these institutions, as well as lively scientific discussions regarding their practical effectiveness in Russian criminal proceedings. The diversity of forms of justice in Russia requires clear regulation of interbranch procedural institutions, including appeal and cassation proceedings. Elimination of unjustified differences in the procedural regulation of these institutions contributes to improving the quality of justice, timely correcting judicial errors and ensuring the legitimate interests of citizens. The article presents an analysis of law enforcement practice reflecting modern trends in procedural regulation of the control and verification stages of criminal proceedings. Based on the assessment of the identified situations, the author has developed proposals for the unification of legislation in the field of judicial review by higher authorities in the criminal process.
