The article summarizes publications of Russian researchers of the second half of the 20th century devoted to the ontogenesis and ecological morphology of woody plants. Fifteen forest-forming tree species are considered. It is established that pioneer tree species are the least studied, while Pinus sibirica and Quercus robur are the he most thoroughly studied. The variability of habitus within the ecological amplitude and in different parts of the range is insufficiently described for all species. Coverage of poorly studied species and previously unconsidered variants of ecological conditions, complex interdisciplinary research and development of mathematical models of crown morphogenesis seem promising.
