The modern educational process at the university should be focused on the needs of production. This is not only the preparation of an ordinary performer. But a specialist who has good potential in his field of activity. In conditions of general education, elements of individual training of students can be implemented. They are based on the early identification of students' professional preferences. This article presents the results of studies of professional inclinations of future specialists-engineers. And also, to identify students who are disposed to participate in research and engineering activities. Sociological research based on the Yovaishi method includes an original solution to improve the reliability of primary respondent information. It has been established that the greatest preference among students has such areas as a penchant for practical activities and work with people. It fits well into the formats of specialization. It have been found that students, in general, lack a clear desire for scientific activity. Despite this, it is recommended to pay attention to those students who rates this area above the rest. The results of the study made it possible to recommend a detailed study of professional disciplines that are of the greatest interest to students. In addition, proposals have been formulated for further employment of students in specific production units and in full-time positions in motor transport and repair and service enterprises.
