The current demographic situation in Russia is characterized by a continuing natural decline in the population, which is a consequence of the excess of mortality over fertility. The issue of the impact of the level of economic development on the demographic behavior of the population in Russia as a whole remains debatable. The economic factor continues to have an impact on the social sphere, since in conditions of crisis and a general low standard of living, the population has organic access to high-quality medical care and medicines, as well as a natural change in the demographic behavior of families regarding the birth of children. The study evaluates the relationship between demographic indicators and the economic development of Russia based on the analysis of data series for the period 2010-2022, identifies the prevailing trends and their causes. It has been established that the problem of population decline in Russia today, as before, is relevant: after a short period of population growth in 2014-2015, since 2016, the population decline has intensified against the background of natural decline. This is due to the fact that the birth rate of the population has been steadily decreasing for several years, while the applied social policy measures aimed at improving the demographic climate do not bring the expected results against the background of higher mortality. In the whole country, there is a close correlation between the size of GDP per capita and natural population decline, as well as the rate of decline in the total population, taking into account the time lag of 1-2 years. This suggests that negative changes in the economy have a delayed negative impact on the demographic situation, since the aggravation of crisis phenomena in the economy contributes to a change in the demographic behavior of the population, which is most pronounced only after 1-2 years.
