The ideas of interaction between an author and a social demand in contemporary journalism are considered in the article using as an example the history of publication of a city magazine «Perm Press-Center» (1998-2004). Intention of the editorial staff of «Perm Press-Center» to create materials in an essay manner expressing their personal point of view in the situation of the strong fight for income from advertising was unique. The editorial staff of «Perm Press-Center» approved a new way of work with advertisers having indirect advertising articles and gradually forming intellectual background. Observing today's interest of the local journalists to creating essays, we can assert that «Perm Press-Center» in certain sense became an experimental project due to which Perm journalism has been enriched with new methods of the interaction between commercial order and author's trend to make essays. The magazine has defined the highest level of the quality of production aiming to creative search and personal manner of giving information.
