Technology of smelting steel in big electric arc furnaces EAF-180 started up in 2006 is continuously developing at electric steel manufactory in the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works. Industrial experiments were carried out to establish the dependence of iron oxides FeO and Fe2O3 content in the slag upon its overall oxidation. This allowed to describe the dependence of FeO/Fe2O3 ratio on overall stag oxidation. No correlation was found of overall slag oxidation with the consumption of carbon injected for slag foaming. Fume analysis in the same period of melting displayed a sharp jump of carbon oxide content (especially CO) and an increase of temperature. Low recovery of injected carbon by the melt causes much of it to oxidize in the gas phase.
