In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in the phenomenon of smell in the humanities. At the same time, the study of smell from the point of view of its aesthetic content, emotional connotations and role in a literary work determines the choice of a methodological position and helps to distinguish between the terms olfactory and odorization. The analysis of the story "Beauty" revealed the peculiarities of the functioning of olfactory motives and allowed us to characterize the interaction of olfactory motives with other motive complexes within the artistic system of F.K. Sologub. At the same time, the use of olfactory motives in the story, on the one hand, corresponded to the tendencies of the culture of the turn of the century, actualizing issues related to the expansion of the boundaries of consciousness and synesthesia, on the other hand, it was conditioned by the direction of the philosophical and aesthetic searches of one of the first Russian decadents, which is primarily evidenced by the peculiarities of the construction of the author's motive complexes, as well as the tendency to rethink traditional motives and the uniqueness of the use of bodily discourse. Based on the study, the following conclusions were made: in the artistic world of the story, olfactory quality primarily determines communication between characters, constructs the plot, determines the deep semantics of episodes, actualizing cultural-historical and mythological associations. At the same time, the key forms of representation of olfactory motifs are rows that vary in the degree of openness - closure, and the location and interaction of olfactory motifs within a row, as well as the features of interaction between rows included in various motive complexes are determined by the unique use of bodily discourse and the philosophical and aesthetic views of F.K. Sologub.
