The organization and activities of the "Society for averting illiteracy"

On the basis of newly revealed archival materials from the funds of the State archive of Ulyanovsk oblast and the State archive of Contemporary history of Ulyanovsk oblast, the authors examine the ways of the final elimination of illiteracy among adults in the Ulyanovsk province in 1926-1927. This task was solving not only by schools of public education, but also by public organizations, party and Komsomol activists, representatives of rural and urban intelligentsia, for example, the society “Down with Illiteracy”. The involvement of the state authorities contributed to the organization of such societies, revitalization of their activity, and the implementation of their tasks.
