The period of the Great Patriotic War from autumn 1942 to spring 1945 is characterized as a period of transition and offensive initiatives of the Red Army. As a result of the successful advance of the Red Army at the fronts, there appeared a great number of prisoners of war; it became necessary to organize medical aid for the special contingent in the Soviet Union. Numerous specialized medical agencies were organized in the country, including special hospitals in the rear for prisoners of war and internees. Part of the special hospitals in the wartime was located on the territory of the Kirov region. The article is devoted to studies of the work of special hospitals in the region from early 1943 to spring 1945, their medical care, problems of their organization and results of their activities as well as special features of the contingent.
