Organization of reindeer husbandry of the state farm “Severniy” of Anabar district of Yakutia at the turn of the 1980–1990s (based on field research materials)

Based on specific field material, the article presents the characteristics of reindeer husbandry as the leading branch of the Arctic state farm “Severny” of Anabar district of Yakutia during the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. A local example of the organizational structure of a state farm, its use of land resources, deer pastures directly is shown; an analysis of the economic state of reindeer husbandry as the leading branch of the Arctic state farm during the last decade of socialism and on the threshold of post-Soviet transformations is made. Archival documents on land management of reindeer pastures of the state farm allowed the author to assess the use of land resources in the cycle of annual reindeer husbandry, to analyze the economic efficiency indicators of the leading branch of the state farm, to calculate the dynamics of the reindeer population for the 1990s in the conditions of a resource-saving approach to the pastures of the Arctic territories. The considered experience of the reindeer herding state farm is an example of a successful traditional Arctic economy of the late twentieth century and can serve as a guide for organization of modern activities in this direction.
