Hog farming organization in the conditions of closed city (1954-1965)

The publication purpose was to show the process of the organization of pigs fattening in the conditions of closed city. The research covers the period from 1954 to 1965 and is based on the documents and materials of Zheleznogorsk city archive, including the decisions of Executive Committee of the City Council of People's Deputies, the resolutions of joint meetings of Bureau of the CPSU City Committee and Executive Committee of City Coun-cil, protocols of discussion of appropriate questions at meetings of Executive Committee of the City Council, the plans of organizational and technical ac- tions of state farm, plans of hog farming, references of a veterinary supervi-sion, socialist obligations, reportings of city radio. In the study the problems of development of local subsidiary farm focused on pigs growing in state farm are considered and also at the enterprises and the organizations of the city. The process of the organization of hog farming using collecting food waste in dining rooms and the enterprises of food industry is analyzed. It is shown that the expansion of pigs’ quantity was connected with rapid growth of population. The tendencies as overfulfillment, and failure of plan targets are revealed. Positive and negative aspects of pig farms are considered. It is established that nonprofessional and negligent attitude to pig-breeding and non-compliance with veterinary norms led to the outbreaks of dangerous in-fectious diseases. The conclusion that production of pork allowed to receive meat at low cost price is drawn and to provide with fresh production enter-prises of public catering, child care and medical institutions of the city.
