Осмысление «современного» (modern) в викторианской эстетической критике

В статье анализируется динамика представления о современном (modern) в викторианской эстетической критике. Объектом пристального внимания является процесс «кристаллизации» настоящего в эстетической мысли, утверждение настоящего вне связи с прошлым и вне иерархической вертикали, возникновение представления об «истинном настоящем» в формулировке Поля де Мана. Рефлексия по поводу современного в работах Джона Рескина, Мэтью Арнольда, Уолтера Пейтера 1840 - 1870-х гг. рассматривается в контексте «Спора о древних и новых», как он проецируется в XIX в. «Новые» (современные) авторы не только замещают «древних» в каноне, но сам канон начинает восприниматься как явление подвижное, сменяющееся, красота становится достоянием текущего времени. Исследовательская мысль фокусируется на самом процессе модернизации, переходе от абстрактного представления о прекрасном к утверждению, что прекрасное существует как объект человеческого опыта. Интенсивное переживание отдельных мгновений стало объединяющим моментом в модернистской эстетике с ее пристрастием к фрагментарности, «потоку сознания» и проч.
