Studies of the religious policies of King Alexander I Karađorđević and his government at the beginning of the 20th century mostly focus on his relationship with the Russian émigré community (which later became the ROCOR), to which he offered protection, as well as his role in the unification of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1920. However a more objective study of this historical period (sine ira et studio, according to Tacitus), must also consider the wider aspects of his religious policies, including his relations with the Jewish and Muslim communities, the Roman Catholic Church, and the other various confessions that existed in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later, Yugoslavia). In this article, the author presents key examples that demonstrate inter-confessional relations and religious policies in such a multi-ethnic and multi-confessional state as was the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes at the beginning of the 20th century.
