In this article, the role of the USSR for modern culture is revealed. Soviet culture is an extremely interesting and ambiguous phenomenon. On the one hand, it determined the trends of the socio-cultural process in the world, on the other hand, it was influenced by Western culture in the broadest sense of the word. Russian culture in this era went through several of the most significant stages: the first post-October decade, the period of totalitarianism, the period of the Great Patriotic War, the post-war period, the period of "Thaw" and the period of "stagnation". At all these stages, the great role of the state in the development of culture, the relative passivity of the population, and the large gap between the culture of the masses and its most prominent representatives manifested themselves. The contradictory nature of cultural development in the Soviet period led to the accumulation of numerous contradictions, the resolution of which has not yet been completed. In order to fully study the above-mentioned stages of culture, in this article they are considered not as monolithic and stationary units, but as a dynamic organism that develops under the influence of social mores, political trends and other conditions.
