The article deals with the different concepts to the definition of a speaking skill as one of the basic components of students' communicative competence. The authors highlight the special features making possible to identify the concepts of “skill" and “ability". Different kinds of speaking skills are analyzed. The main characteristics of the speaking skill development and indicators of its maturity are described.
