Main trends in the transformation of matrimonial and reproductive behavior in modern China
The article is devoted to study of the characteristics of matrimonial and reproductive behavior in modern China, analysis of the main trends and causes, the ongoing changes. The relevance of this study is due to the depth and speed of the transformation processes that family is subject to in China. At the same time, being the most important social institution, family has a direct impact on the course of development of the society. This study is based on a comparable analysis of the data of General Population Censuses, regulatory documents and study of the results of research of Chinese scientists. The author made the following conclusions: 1) the institution of family and marriage in modern China is characterized by such trends as increase in the age of marriage and childbirth, decrease in marriage and birth rates, emergence of voluntary childlessness, decrease in the size of family, its nuclearization, changes in gender and intergenerational roles, spread of alternative forms of family, increase in the number of divorces and re-marriages; 2) all these changes are caused by the processes of industrialization and urbanization, which began in China in the second half of the 19th century and significantly accelerated by the political and socio-economic transformations of the second half of the 20th century, in particular by the policy of birth planning and market reforms, initiated by the Chinese leadership in 1978; 3) the trends indicated above are comparable with the global ones while maintaining a number of regional differences such as a small share of people who have never been married and childless women of childbearing age, a low level of illegitimate births, rapid growth of households consisting of one person, married couples without children, as well as exterritorial families and «empty nests.» Cohabitation, although becoming more widespread, is not an alternative to official marriage, usually preceding it; 4) all these changes in family-marriage relations are indicative of their transition to new forms. The Chinese authorities are striving to develop an appropriate demographic and family policy in order to maintain the viability of this socially important institution.
