The author found that professional competencies are the knowledge, skills and abilities that are necessary for successful work in a particular profession, and include both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that allow the employee to effectively perform their duties. Approaches to the formation of competencies may differ in developed and developing economies. For the developed economies of the USA, Great Britain, EU countries, Japan and other countries, the formation of professional competencies takes place in the following main areas: education, vocational training, teamwork, leadership development, innovation and creativity. In developing countries, considerable attention is paid not only to teamwork, stimulation of innovative processes and creativity, but also on-the-job training, the activities of professional associations and communities, the widespread use of information technology, assistance in career development by company management. It is concluded that the formation of the professional competence of workers is an important process in developing countries, primarily in China and India, which have significant labor resources. Despite the measures taken by the governments and the business community of these countries, it is necessary to develop strategies and programs that will help improve the quality of education and increase the level of professional competence of workers.
