The paper highlights the analysis of a brief ethnographic material of a separate paper in the newspaper «Priamurskiye Vedomosti» - the first printing organ of the Russian Far East. Being an important historical source with a specific way of presenting information, periodicals allow us to reconstruct the peculiarities of the historical past of the Far Eastern region. The analyzed newspaper paper contains data characterizing not only the ethnocultural characteristics of the indigenous population of the Lower Amur and Sakhalin, but also their ethnic contacts with settlers, culturally related people of Eastern Asia. The author describes the content of the Cultural Festival of the Lower Amur and Sakhalin ethnic groups and notes the duality of these peoples' views on interethnic contacts, emphasizing that many of the authentic cultural features bear the impression of the syncretic attitudes of neighboring ethnic groups.
