Features of the father image in adolescent boys from single-mother families: through their mothers’ and their own eyes

Statement of the problem. In recent decades, both public consciousness and academic discourse have witnessed a transformation of the traditional paternal role, along with increasing recognition of the specific contribution of the father and the father image to the child’s development and well-being. Given that single-mother families with children under the age of 18 currently constitute approximately one third of all families in Russia, the problem of the mother’s influence on the formation of the internal representation of the paternal figure in adolescent boys under conditions of paternal deprivation has become particularly significant and relevant [Nikolaeva, 2025; Nekrasova, 2025; Moles-Kalt et al., 2024; Morgan, 2025; Reis et al., 2025; Kgadima, Spaumer, 2026, etc.]. The purpose of the article is to present the theoretical basis and results of empirical testing of the hypothesis: the image of the father in a teenager is not a direct reflection of his objective behavior and qualities, but is to a greater extent mediated by the mother’s attitude towards the father, the less experience the teenager has with communicating with him. Methodology (materials and methods). The study was conducted using the subject-activity approach (S.L. Rubinstein, A.V. Brushlinsky, K.A. Abulkhanova, etc.) based on S.L. Rubinstein’s principle of determinism. The empirical research methodology is an integrative approach: a combination of qualitative analysis of projective data and methods of mathematical statistics. In addition to an introductory questionnaire concerning the father’s participation in the life of the family and the child, the study employed modified versions of the Twenty Statements Test “Who Am I?” by M. Kuhn and T. McPartland: “My Father Through My Own Eyes” and “My Father Through My Mother’s Eyes”; the author’s projective technique “The Mother’s Attitude Toward the Father and Interaction with Him”, based on the sentence-completion method; and the questionnaire “Youth Report on Parental Attitudes” [Tikhomirova et al., 2021]. The sample consisted of 40 adolescent boys aged 12–14: 20 adolescents from two-parent families and 20 adolescents from single-mother families. Research results. The findings obtained using the three methods show that the predominant features of the father image among adolescent boys from single-mother families are reduced descriptive richness, predominantly negative emotional valence, and expectation of emotional rejection from the paternal figure. No statistically significant differences were found between the adolescents’ own father image and the father image “through the mother’s eyes”. Exceptions were observed in adolescents who maintained in regular contact with their father, or whose mother conveyed a positive attitude toward a deceased father. By contrast, in adolescents from two-parent families, the father image was more complete, multifaceted, positive, and relatively autonomous from the presumed maternal evaluation; significant differences were found for both positive and negative characteristics. Conclusions. The obtained data suggest that the father image in adolescent boys from single-mother families is influenced by the mother’s attitude toward the father and toward communication with him to a much greater extent than in adolescents from two-parent families. When an adolescent is deprived of the opportunity to form his own image of the father through direct interaction with him, he almost completely reproduces the maternal father image, which in the overwhelming majority of cases is negative. This creates developmental risks, since, as previous studies show, a negative father image constitutes an unfavourable basis for adolescents’ personal development and well-being. The novelty of the study lies in identifying the mother’s mediating influence on the father image in adolescent boys, interpreted through S.L. Rubinstein’s methodological principle that “external causes act only through internal conditions…”. In this study, this principle is applied through adolescents’ subjective representations both of their own father image and of the maternal father image. The results highlight the need for psychological support for mothers raising children alone, particularly in helping them understand the considerable influence they often unconsciously exert on the formation of the adolescent’s father image. They also point to the need to address the complex ethical dilemma between maintaining realism and avoiding excessive negativity or one-sidedness in the representation of the father image.
