The article explains that the synthesis of competence and contextual approaches to mathematics teaching at a technical university helps to implement such tendencies of higher technical education development as humanization, fundamentalism and practice-orientation. The author specifies the concept of competence and contextual teaching, develops and substantiates guidelines of mathematical education for technical universities. It is shown that the educational activity of students includes such aspects, as motivation, reflection, symbolic activity.
