The article is devoted to the review and systematization of the features of the graphic language of visual images in Japanese animation (anime). The article discusses the origins, genre specifics, principles of creation that distinguish this type of animation from its foreign counterparts, as well as the symbolism of individual elements of the visual series of anime. The author concludes that anime is an independent form of mass art, only technically close to animation in its classical sense; that the popularity of anime outside Japan, despite the presence of pronounced features of the Far Eastern mentality, largely inaccessible to Western viewers, is primarily due to genre and content diversity and orientation to a wide age and diverse subcultural contingent of viewers. Despite the popularity of anime as an object of study by cultural scientists, sociologists, psychologists in our country and abroad, as well as the pronounced "mass culture" of this phenomenon, there are still many mysteries and unexplored aspects in this deeply national art form.
