Using the comparative analysis of the story by Fouqué Undina and the poem under the same title by V.A.Zhukovsky the author proves that the translation made by the Russian poet is perceived as a work of the Russian romantic culture. V.A.Zhukovsky's translation is very close to the original prosaic text, but the image of the main heroine acquired new poetic meanings, typical of Russian fairy-tale and romantic tradition. Semantic and character enrichment of the image of Undina is also a consequence of V.A.Zhukovsky's poetic mastery.
