Features of mass media self-regulation

The article deals with the features of mass media self-regulation. The author analyzes the category of self-regulation. On the basis of the analysis of a notion of self-regulation and a viewpoint of a law-maker, the notion of self-regulation is given. The author comes to the conclusion that a self-regulation is a difficult, integrated mechanism of social adjusting of public relations, by means of which using the different types of social regulators at different levels independent and initiative activity is performed by the subjects of entrepreneurial and professional occupation, the aim of which is the development and standard and rules of the given activity setting, as well as the control of compliance with the requirements. The main reasons for the development of mass-media self-regulation are highlighted: reduction of state control over the functioning of mass-media, conservation of editorial freedom, improving the quality of mass-media and responsibility for the information disseminated, ensuring consumer access to mass-media products.
