The development of electrochemical generators Volna and Foton for the Moon program of the Soviet Union and BURAN Orbiter is summarized. A comparison with foreign developments has been made. A possibility of storing manufactured electrochemical generators with no maintenance and changes in electrochemical characteristics for 15 years or more has been verified. The areas of further development are presented, and a possibility of using the development results in other areas, i.e. nickel-hydrogen batteries, deep-sea vehicles, cars is shown. In the future, these generators can be used in energy storage systems at the lunar base and in uninterrupted (emergency) power supplies on Earth.
