Introduction: the relevance of the research is determined by the need for a comprehensive analysis of legal innovations in the history of Russian law, starting from the Old Russian period. Studying the evolution from Russkaya Pravda to the 1993 Constitution of the Russian Federation allows identifying the continuity and transformation of legal principles, their connection with the socio-political context. Purpose: systematization of key innovations in law at different historical stages, assessment of their role in shaping the national legal tradition and identity. The research methodology includes: the historical-legal analysis of legal monuments (from Russkaya Pravda to modern codes); the comparative law method to identify continuity between eras; a systematic approach to assessing the interaction of law with institutions of power. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the periodization of the interaction of legal traditions and innovations in domestic law. Practical significance: the results can be used for: improving legal education; accounting for historical experience in lawmaking; forecasting trends in legal development. Conclusions: the Russian legal system developed under the influence of both internal and global factors, remaining a dynamic institution capable of adaptation. This determines the relevance of further study of the contradictions between the formal enshrinement of norms and their implementation, as well as the influence of globalization on national law.
