Based on an applied sociological survey of students of the Berezniki branch of the Perm National Research Polytechnic University in Berezniki, Perm Krai, the second largest and socio-economic potential city in the Western Urals (after the regional center of Perm), it is found out what work is for respondents (more than 90% of respondents are working) and what they like most about work. The results also show which qualities help to achieve professional success. The respondents' answers also demonstrate what they want to achieve in their work, on whom/what successful employment depends and what they focus on when choosing a profession. The authors clarify the role of the state in employment and how modern youth treats unemployment. The most attractive professions are shown in the opinion of representatives of the younger generation and their attitude to the prospect of professional growth. The survey results can be used by scientific and pedagogical personnel in the preparation (adjustment) of work programs, potential employers who are in dire need of highly professional personnel and are thinking about long-term prospects for the development of their industries. The opinions of young people should also be taken into account by government structures, which work out territorial development programs that focus on preserving labor resources, improving the standard and quality of life.
