Passport system of pre-revolutionary Russia (historical review)

Passport system in tsarist Russia is considered in the article. Passports were of several kinds with different validity terms. A Russian citizen had no right to live wherever he wanted. The right to obtain a passport, settle and go beyond a permanent place of residence depended greatly on the social status, religion, profession and nationality of the person.
