The article is devoted to the famous French teacher, writer and priest of the second half of the XVII – first quarter of the XVIII centuries Francois Fenelon (1651–1717), who left a significant positive mark on the history of literature and pedagogy. Fenelon proved himself to be a writer who became one of the founders of the historical and adventure movement in literature ("The Adventures of Telemachus"), and as the author of the first pedagogical work on the issue of women's education ("On the education of girls"). His views, practical activities and literary and pedagogical works marked an important, progressive stage in the development of the tradition of humanism in the history of European education, as well as literature.
