Using Ukraine as an example the paper attempts to trace how the consciousness of Ukrainians has been reformatted during the 30 years of independence, when they transformed from a fraternal nation into a community alien and unfriendly to Russia. The paper examines the main spheres of life and ways that contributed to this restructuring: the emergence of new state symbols, the promotion of new heroes and the discretization of old ones, depicted in monuments and place names, restructuring of religion, discrimination of minority languages in favor of the Ukrainian language, rewriting of history, and creation of new holidays.
Transformation of ukrainians' identity, new state symbols, emergence of new heroes, renaming of cities and streets, restructuring of religion, tightening of language policy, rewriting of history textbooks
