Correspondence of schema-monk Mathew (Olshansky), librarian of St. Panteleimon's Monastery, with eminent scholars in Russia

All philologists, historians, orientalists, art critics of Russia who became the famous scientists in their country and other countries visited the Russian St. Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos at the turn of XIX-XX centures. Here they studied manuscripts, icons and objects of the Byzantine art in monasteries. Schemonk Mathew (Ol'shanskiy) who was a librarian and the secretary of the Russian monastery in 1878-1911 had provided invaluable support for the implementation of Russian scientists, photography and copying of documents for their scientific activity. Mathew had knowledge in different areas (history, divinity, archeology, philology) and was very useful to young scientists who came to Mount Athos and looked for materials for studying. Later many of them corresponded with him. Today leters from 210 correspondents who worked in Athos monasteries are stored in St. Panteleimon Monastery archive (АРПМА. Оп. № 38).
