The article describes the portrait of an American on the cusp of the 20th and 21st centuries. The author refers to the works of S. Huntington and G. Myrdal and pays special attention to the religious component of American identity and the concept of “American creed”. The author draws attention to the tendency according to which, by the end of the 20th century, American identity was characterized by the supremacy of the ideas of democracy and republicanism, freedom and equality. The author also draws attention to how the concept of “American identity” differs in the discourse of Democrats and Republicans. The focus is also on the immigration crisis of American identity. The study allows to conclude that long discussions about what is the American identity, might not have finished if the migration crisis did not remind the people of the United States that democracy, equality and Christianity are their distinguishing features. “American values” have become a reference point for the fight against migrants, whose influx is receiving more and more criticism in America, which is reflected in popular sentiment.
