Echo questions in informal dialog: cross-cultural perspective

We focus on correlation of pragmatics and phonetics of echo-questions in Russian, American and French dialogues. The study revealed some quantitative differences in the usage of echo-questions by speakers of different languages. In cross-cultural settings some echo-questions may be misinterpreted by L2 speakers due to the interference of their native prosodic systems. Some pedagogical implications are discussed.
