The monastery exile emerged in the medieval Russia was poorly documented in legal acts, thus being difficult to study. Studying archives of monasteries serving as places of exile makes it possible to discover documents that have not survived in the archives of central state and church institutions. The article examines the preparatory stage of the church reform of Peter I, during which the monastery exile was transferred under the control of the two government agencies: the Monastery Office (Monastyrskii Prikaz) and Preobrazhensky Office (Preobrazhenskii Prikaz).
