There were many theological treatises in Byzantium which contain scattered, but at times quite elaborate, accounts of metaphysical issues. In this paper Katerina Ierodiakonou focuses on those texts in which Byzantine scholars undertake to present and comment on the metaphysical tradition they inherited from pagan antiquity. In particular, Ierodiakonou focuses on the Byzantine Aristotelian commentaries of Eustratios of Nicaea in an attempt to unravel the Byzantines’ own views on metaphysics, views which are hidden among their sometimes longwinded and often repetitive comments on Aristotle’s works.
