Translation transformations and rendering lexical features into Russian in Anna Czerwinska-Rydel’s novella My Grandma Loves Chopin: translation experience

This article explores translation transformations in literary prose, specifically focusing on the unique lexical features found in Anna Czerwinska-Rydel’s novel My Grandma Loves Chopin and the strategies employed to convey these features in the Russian translation. An analysis of scholarly literature on translation transformations and the rendering of lin-guistic play in literary translation has led to the conclusion that creating an equivalent literary translation provides for considering various factors. These factors include the work’s national, historical, and genre-specific particularities, as well as the author’s creative identity. When pro-ducing a target text identical in spirit to the original, certain losses and modifications are inevita-ble; these are necessary to maintain fidelity to the original on the level of the entire text. The article aims to demonstrate how the application of specific types of translation transformations helps convey the unique character of the original literary text, including adapting cer-tain cultural realities mentioned in the work for the target reader and preserving elements of lin-guistic play based on the phonetic similarities between words. The challenges that a literary translator faces can arise from various sources. The article uses the translation of Anna Czerwinska-Rydel’s My Grandma Loves Chopin as a case study to illus-trate how translation transformations can adapt certain elements of Polish culture for Russian-speaking readers and recreate verbal play through the use of the target language resources.
