The article deals with the first Russian letter writing manual, «Untitled», created in the XV century. It turns out that it was influenced, on the one hand, by the tradition of the Old Russian teaching message of the XI-XIV centuries, and, on the other, by the antique friendly letter. Under this double influence, the establishment of constitutive features of the epistolary genre and the isolation of the latter in the system of genres of Old Russian literature took place.
