The first Genealogy department in Russia was created in 1991 on the basis of the genealogical collection of Yu. B. Shmarov in the State Museum of A. S. Pushkin (Moscow). Throughout its existence, it has become one of the most important referral centers on the genealogy of the Russian nobility and the only one of its kind in the museum field. Despite the interest in genealogy in modern society and numerous references to the Genealogy department and the collection of Yu. B. Shmarov in various scientific and reference publications, the topic of the creation and history of the Department was never considered. For the first time, the history of the department is narrated, the concept of acquisition is analyzed taking into account the genealogical informativity of the museum object. Special attention is paid to modern genealogical projects created in collaboration with the Genealogy department.
