The article is devoted to the problems of studying the history of hospitality in St. Petersburg, which can be traced from the very foundation of the city in 1703. Since the founding of St. Petersburg, the hospitality industry in Russia has changed beyond recognition. The new city, facing Western Europe, gave impetus to the emergence of new types of hospitality and changes in their standards. «Hospitality» should be interpreted as a form of a warm welcome towards guests. It includes a huge scope of the industry, covering various areas of activity of people, from tourism in general, and ending with private areas, for example, entertainment, hotel and restaurant business, catering and much more. The article discusses not only the creation of the hospitality industry, but also the formation of the so-called congress and exhibition and fair activities, in particular the creation of hotels and inns, as well as assemblies, fireworks, state funerals as a special type of events.
