The first steps in memorial landscape development: projects of war memorials in Karelia in the second half of the 1940s

Бесплатный доступ

Liberation of the USSR territories allowed sculptors and artists not only to discuss the projects of war memorials, like it was 1941-1945, but also to erect monuments. Back then, the Karelian government planned to establish three big memorials dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, including the reconstruction and redesign of the White Sea-Baltic Canal, a significant waterway for the north of the USSR. Not all of the proposed monuments were erected. The research is based on the documents found in the National archive and the National museum of the Republic of Karelia. The article describes both the implemented and unimplemented projects of war memorials in the republic of Karelia in the early postwar years. It analyses the reasons that made such construction impossible. Development of the war memorial landscape of Karelia in the following years is also considered.
