Introduction. The relevance of the study is due to the modernization of the higher and secondary education system in the country. In this regard, turning to the historical experience of the Soviet state in training teaching staff in the context of social transformations of the 1950s-1960s seems especially important, since it meets the needs of modern social development in Russia. The novelty of the work is due to new conceptual approaches that are implemented within the framework of social history, as well as an expanded source base. The purpose of the study is to analyze the problem of training teaching staff and the financial situation of school teachers in the retrospective context of the social history of the RSFSR in the 1950s-1960s. Sources and methods. The study is based mainly on the analysis of a large set of documents stored in the RGANI, GA RF, RGASPI. The study was conducted primarily in line with the research strategies of social history, using the method of critical interpretation of sources with the involvement of conceptual analysis. Analysis. The turn of the 1950s was marked by the transition to general seven-year education, which increased the need for teaching staff. By stimulating the influx of teachers into the educational sphere, the government sought to increase the prestige of teachers and improve their financial situation, which had remained unsatisfactory for a long time. Unemployment, which engulfed the Soviet education system in the 1950s, became an acute social problem for some school teachers. The temporary surplus of teachers in the RSFSR was based on a sharp reduction in school contingents due to a decrease in the birth rate during the war. In order to improve the situation, the Ministry of Education of the RSFSR carried out a number of measures, including changing the system of training teaching staff.
