A pendant with the Rurikids sign from Kleshchin of the Russian chronicles

Trapeze pendants with a princely tamga-shaped signs are one of few categoriesof archaeological artifacts directly linked to the representation of the princely power inMedieval Rus' in the second half of the 10th - first half of the 11th centuries. The paperreviews a new find of a pendant of this type discovered during the excavations of Kleshchin,which is a town mentioned in the historical chronicles that used to be located near LakePleshcheevo not far from Pereslavl-Zalessky. Most pendants of the similar type publishedin recent years are looters' finds. The Kleshchin pendant complements a small group ofitems, the origin of which is well documented, while the context is at least partially clarified.It is the first pendant with a princely sign uncovered in North-East Medieval Rus'. Thisdiscovery shows that new centers of settlement, which started appearing in the North-East,were brought under the prince rule as early as the end of the 10th-11th centuries.
